Cómpeta dates back at least 2000 years and is believed to have Roman origins. Competa is situated in the foothills of La Maroma (2065 m) which is the highest peak of the Sierra Tejeda, at an altitude of around 638 metres above sea level there are some spectacular views. The 100,000-acre Tejeda national park, between the provinces of Malaga and Granada, is on your doorstep! .
The Sierra de Almijara which lies above Competa has national park status and is a Mecca for walkers and hikers. This is the real Spain and a world away from the built up holiday resorts that are situated on the coast of the Costa Del Sol.
Further south there is a beautiful stretch of coastline with cliffs and small sandy bays. Located just 30 mins drive is the delightful beach side town of Torre Del Mar with over four kms of sandy beaches lined with restaurants and bars. Nerja to the east, a 30 mins drive, boasts 16 kms of beaches with powdery sand and sparkling clear water.
Shops : You will find that you can get most of your fresh food shopping in Competa ( Meat, Fish, Bread, Fruit and Vegtables. ). There are several supermarkets, souvenir shops as well as a bakery, fishmonger, banks with cashpoints. There is also a local market on a Saturday morning that sells locally grown produce, clothing, health food and most other items that you would associate with a general market.
Bars & Restaurants : You’ll find most of the activity centred around the main square in the town. Here there are plenty of very good restaurants and bars offering everything from coffee and Tapas to wine and top quality food.
Ferias and Fiestas are a key part of Spanish life and Competa’s Saint day is the last weekend in July every year – a weekend of music , dancing and fireworks. Next to the Semana Santa (Eastern) the biggest festivity is the Noche del Vino *( Night of the wine), held annually on the 15th August . It is the celebration of first grape harvest and again is a very typically Spanish fiesta carrying on late into the night. Competa is famous for the sweet wine which is made from the local Muscatel grape .
The harvesting of the grapes is marked with a celebration every 15th day of August called the 'Noche del Vino'* . This includes crushing of grapes by foot in the old square and flamenco dancers dancing in the Church square in the evening
The nearest beach town is Torrox Costa which can be reached in about 20 mins taking the Torrox road out of Competa. Torrox is small and not as busy or developed as the larger resorts. There are a number of beaches to choose from.
There are a number of restaurants and chiringuitos along the length of the beach, including El Ancla, Al Manzur and Merendero Costa del Sol. The chiringuitos are a great place to relax and watch the world pass by.
Several of the places specialise in ‘espetas de sardinas’ – sardines on a stick – and you can often see them cooking on barbecues as you drive past. Or if you’re on the beach, you get that lovely barbecue smell that just makes you hungry.
Nerja is a beautiful place to visit and one of the star attractions is the Balcón de europa (the balcony of europe). This is a man made balcony which overlooks the sea and has some stunning views. There are horse drawn carriages that will take you around the town to see the sights if you would like to see them (you have to pay for this of course)
Nerja is a seaside resort of sandy coves sheltered by the impressive Sierra de Almijara mountains and is often referred to as ‘The Jewel of the Costa del Sol’.
There are over nine kilometres of beaches, from small secluded coves to large sandy areas, which means there is something for everyone.
Burriana beach, or Playa Burriana, is a large, sandy beach situated at the eastern end of town and is Nerja’s premier bathing location.
Playa Burriana is a regular recipient of the prestigious ‘Blue Flag’ of excellence, awarded by the European Union, and the ‘Q for Quality’ flag issued by the Spanish authorities.
It is a modern area, almost a separate village or resort in many ways, with just about every conceivable facility available to the thousands of visitors, both Spanish and foreign, who flock here every year.
Andalusia is the perfect place to practise mountain bike, hiking and walking tours. Short as well as long hiking tours at different levels; up to you to choose. Our village “house” mountain Maroma goes up to 2065 m, El Lucero is 1779m high. Choose one of the many hiking tours in the Sierra Tejeda and Almijara and let the breathtaking views into the Mediterranean and the wild birds and mountain goats surprise you.Other possibilities are canyoning, 4×4 trails, quad trips or mountainbike tours, paragliding, horseback riding or speleology and much more. The area is terrific for race biking and even skiing in the Siera Nevada (2 h) is just one of the possibilities.
El Torcal (1.5 h) is a protected nature park 100 km away from Cómpeta. The special landscape was curved over millions of years. With a bit of imagination you recognize different shapes and forms in the layers of rocks. From El Torcal you can see till the bay of Malaga on clear days.
And of course our list would not be complete if forgot Golf. The Costa del Sol is known for its many excellent golf
courses where you can play winter and summer. Shortest to our B&B is Baviera Golf (18 hole ) (35’).
The caves of Nerja, ‘Las Cuevas de Nerja‘, are just a few km from the centre of Nerja and in the village of Maro. The beautiful cave with its magnificent stalactites is also called the “cathedral of the Paleolithicum”. Thanks to its excellent acoustics, an annualdance and music festival is organized here in summer. Already one year after its discovery, the caves were opened to the public and since then are listed in the top 5 of must sees in Spain. One of the caves has a stalactite of 32m high, one of the biggest in Europe.
